LAKE EYRE - KATI THANDA

Aerial image taken at 28.53 S 137.60 E

The ephemeral reds and ochres of Lake Eyre bays captured from above. Kati Thanda is 15 metres below sea level and Australia’s lowest natural point. On the rare occasions it fills, it becomes our largest lake at 9,500 square kms. Its colours change constantly. In flood - a brilliant sky blue with countless waterbirds, fish and wildflowers. And in drought - salt and algae create stunning hues of pink, often visible from space.
